Tough Field for Northern Dancer

The Northern Dancer BC Turf- GI
                      WO Race 4 1 1/2M- Turf
                             Purse $300.000
                       Three Year Olds and Up

A big field of twelve will be going to the post for the Northern Dancer BC Turf up in Canada at Woodbine Racetrack to go and try to get a grade one win in a pretty prestigious race. There was one scratch but the also eligible drew in so that still keeps a full field in tact for this race. Let’s take a look at the field.

1. Not My Idea (28-9-4-4 $404.730), trained by Wolfs Den

Well this horse hasn’t ran good at all in his last two starts at Saratoga in stakes races. He ran fifth in the Bowling Green Handicap and then ran absolutely terrible in the John’s Call as the favorite. Off of those two races I just don’t see a chance in the world this horse wins but he does like Woodbine.

2. Controlled Power (16-5-4-1 $798.500), trained by Spankys Barn

Earlier on in the year this horse was on an absolute tear winning two grade ones and he won four in a row. His last two starts he has been out of the money though and last out he ran so bad in the Arlington Million. He ran thirteenth that day and didn’t seem to be himself. He will have to turn it around dramatically.

3. Midwestern Slang (21-6-6-4 $2,000.620), trained by Gdp Inc

Here is a horse who I think has very legitimate chance of he runs like he did last time in the grade two Read Stakes at Del Mar. He won that day after a third place finish in the grade one United Nations at Monmouth. He is going to have to run very big but I do think he is capable of doing it.

4. Danzigs Canyon (10-4-1-0 $98.940), trained by Maxmillion Farm

Well I myself wouldn’t have entered this horse in this race after the type of performance he had last time when he ran twelfth in the grade one Sword Dancer at Saratoga. He just did not run good at all that day and I wouldn’t have entered him here. But he has the best turf trainer in the games so I wont question it.

5. Bring The Pain (13-4-4-2 $403.100), trained by Mb Stables

Well one thing that gives this horse a very good chance is that he loves to this far of a distance. He might not have won but he has ran in the top three in his last three races going a mile and an eighth or a mile and a half. He likes the distance for sure but I’m not sure if he is good enough to win the race.

6. Devilish Look (9-3-4-1 $539.020), trained by D J C Racing Stables

Here is a horse who is also coming out of the Bowling Green Handicap and Sword Dance at Saratoga. He ran second by a length in both of those races and was coming at the end both times. I think this might be the race that he finally get the win. I think he has a very good chance to win.

7. Range Of The Sun (17-7-1-1 $704.600), trained by Team 7 Illusions

Here is the winner of the grade one Gold Cup at Santa Anita but he will be switching to the turf for this race. He only has one win on the turf and that was in a starter allowance so I’m not sure if he even likes the turf that much. Maybe he will though and maybe he can get another grade one win.

8. Name Drop (9-4-1-2 $836.550), trained by Mb Stables

Well if the track come up soft definitely count this horse with a good shot to win. He won the American Turf and Penn Mile on soft turf and hasn’t won in his two races since on firm turf. He ran fifth in the Arlington Million last out and third in the Belmont Derby before that. He has a decent shot.

9. Bayou Quartier (23-8-6-4 $755.740), trained by Invicta Group Llc

Here is a pretty good mile and a half turf horse right here. He won three stakes in a row at a mild and a half on the turf so he definitely likes the turf and distance. He ran on the dirt last time in the Pacific Classic and ran thirteenth. He is getting back to the turf so I expect him to run a lot better.

10. Techfluence (32-10-6-7 $1,506.890), trained by The Sidley Stud

Here is another pretty good horse who is coming off of a win over this same turf course in what is basically the local prep for this race. He won the Sky Classic by a length and finally got back to winning ways. I think that helped his confidence and he will be ready to fire a big run in this race.

11. Taniwha (13-5-3-1 $775.660), trained by Aml Racing

Scratched

12. The Laffin Sniper (18-5-6-2 $381.680), trained by Diablo Diablo

This horse is a grade one winner from back in the day when he won the Hollywood Derby as a three year old. Now he is trying to regain that form but it hasn’t happened yet. He ran ninth in the Read Stakes last out and that type of performance will not cut it in here. He will have to run huge to win.

13. Faith In The Surge (14-3-2-4 $76.820), trained by Fractious

Well this runner is lucky to even be in the race since he drew into the field from the also eligible list. He is a very unaccompanied runner and his biggest win was fourteen length win on a soft track one time. I don’t think he stands a chance at all but who knows what can happen in this game.

Summary

I really think that this race is a pretty good field and most of them are pretty nicely matched up with each other. There is some good veterans and a couple youngins that are going to be battling it out. Bayou Quartier is my top pick because he absolutely loves the mile and a half distance.
