Wide Open Field in The Gold Cup

Atomic Twist seen here winning the SA Hcp in March will be one of the favorites in the GR-1 Gold Cup

The Gold Cup

$500.000

1 1/4m Dirt

Santa Anita

  1. Salt Lake City, J. Ortiz, Yahudi Stable:  this five year old looks for his first win for his new connections after being purchased two starts back for $150.000.
  2. Trajic, E. Zayas, Canadian Racing:  This unbeaten three year old takes on older for the first time.  He was perfect through three starts to get his career started before Mb Stables sold him for a pricey $300.000, but it paid off for his new owner as he won the Illinois Derby in his next start after that.
  3. Mach Love, J. Leparoux, Mb Stables:  The OP Handicap winner comes into this race with a very live shot, but it will be his first start going 1 1/4m, the longest he has run thus far is 1 1/8m.
  4. Grandeur, R. Albarado, Mb Stables:  New Orleans Handicap winner comes in having not run further than 1 1/8m like his stable mate to the inside of him, however distance may be a question for this front runner.
  5. Bombastic Thought, F. Pennington, Oval Express Farms:  Just missed in the New Orleans Handicap, may be in tough here but would not be a surprise if he got up to win.
  6. A One, R. Bejarano, Eastern Equine:  this former top handicap horse looks to regain his winning ways after a slew of subpar efforts since his triumph in the Woodward last year at Saratoga.
  7. Atomic Twister, I. Ortiz Jr. Blushing Meadows:  This now four year old has absolutely flourished since his name change! He is the winner of the BC Classic as well as the prestigious SA Handicap, both GI’s.  He just missed in the CT Classic and looks to make his way back to the winners circle here.
  8. Muscle Shoals, J. Velazquez, TwinTowersRacing:  This four year old son of Thats Entertainment has only 2 wins to his 13 starts, however many of those where made in tough stakes company.  This one is in tough and may just need some class relief.
  9. Gentile Il Buono, T. Baze, Sc Lanciano:  Was third in the CT Classic, looks for his first win of 2017 in some tough company.
  10. Dogs Infowarrior, M. Gutierrez, John Henry: fresh off the private purchase off of Grimely, this six year old tries to rebound from a disappointing effort in the CT Classic.
