Heavy Favorite Phun Stick Doesn’t Disappoint In Spring Fever

Spring Fever Stakes ($100.000 Purse)
SA- For Fillies and Mares Four Years Old and Upward Foaled in CA
Six Furlongs on the Dirt
February 24, 2019

Despite being winless in her last nine starts, the betting public made Phun Stick a favorite to the tune of about 1/20. The odds makers made her the overwhelming favorite in the morning line at 1/10, and she would not disappoint. This sixth win of her career had been elusive for trainer Axeman, but at last, it is here. It makes Axeman a first time winner of the stake, and her jockey, R Bejarano, has now won the race twice. Congratulations! The time of the win was 1:09.59, the second quickest in the race’s history. Let’s take a look!

(1/4 Mile- :22.53)- As the race gets underway, both Laffin At Ya, from Chili King Stables, and Liverpool Spitfire, out of Childs Play, get off to a quick start. Ultimately, Laffin At Ya takes a lead by a length, though Liverpool Spitfire starts to come back on her as they approach the turn. Our eventual winner, Phun Stick, is in a stalking position for Axeman and potentially seems to be in a position where she can split the frontrunners. It’s about another length to Machined (Team 7 Illusions), and Sweetbaby Laga (Night Rider Stables) is the trailer.

(½ Mile, Top Of Stretch- :45.36)- Making their way around the turn, Liverpool Spitfire now pokes a head in front of Laffin At Ya. However, Phun Stick was moving out of her stalking position now, and moving three wide. She was still a length and a half back, but all of her supporters in the stands had to be feeling very good at this point. Machined trailed by about three, and Sweetbaby Laga was four and a half behind.

(Finish- 1:09.59)- It was certainly not easy for Phun Stick in the stretch. She made her move to the outside, and gradually gained on Liverpool Spitfire, but that one was not going away at all, and battling Phun Stick hard. Eventually, Phun Stick will prevail and finally get her sixth career win, and Liverpool Spitfire looks good running second. Laffin At Ya hung around to be within a length of them to be third. Machined and Sweetbaby Laga never did much of anything here today.

About The Winner- Phun Stick, trained by Axeman and ridden to victory by R Bejarano, is a fiv year old mare by Phuneios, and is out of Broomstick Le Feu. She was bred in California by Axeman as a second quarter two year old, and they have been together throughout. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her sixth in 25 starts, and her second stake win. Her career earnings are now $654.370.
